Coach: George Taplin

George Taplin’s youth coaching career spans four decades. As a senior in high school, while lettering in basketball, baseball, and cross country, he coached the town’s Little League team to a second place finish. During his naval career, he coached men’s softball, and youth baseball and basketball both in the US and overseas. He has spent the past winter helping aspiring basketball players learn the basic mechanics of basketball at the Sunday Fairfax Stars clinics, and helping to prepare the younger girls to get ready for the AAU season at clinics on Friday nights.
His first year as a coach for the Fairfax Stars, George’s coaching philosophy is to concentrate on the mechanics of basketball, and helping the players to understand the game’s fundamentals. He uses the players’ natural passion for the game to help them to constantly increase their skill set and level of play as individuals. The team’s focus is a smothering press and an aggressive flex-style offense. “While the clock is running, the players are running”.
George has a Bachelors Degrees in Business Management, and a Masters Degree in Software Engineering and is a current member of the Positive Coaching Alliance. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1992 and currently works as a software engineer. He lives with his wife, Gail, and daughter, Kelly in Fairfax County.
