Stars 13U Gold Teams Wins Charm City Tournament
The Fairfax Stars 13U Gold team, playing in the 14U Elite Division, went undefeated and won the championship of the Charm City “Under Armour Showdown” Tournament in Baltimore this past weekend. The team accomplished this feat despite missing key players for parts or all of the weekend.
In pool play, the Stars started off with a win over a tough Baltimore Sure Shots team, 63-45, before taking on the celebrated Exodus club from New York. The Stars used nonstop defensive pressure to gain a 62-39 win in this game.
In bracket play, the Stars took on Exodus again in the semifinals. The well-coached Exodus team used classic New York City guard play and ramped up defense to make the game closer, but the Stars prevailed, 53-48. In the championship matchup, the Stars took on the Prince William Virginians. In a back and forth game that went down to the last two minutes, the Stars toughed out a 55-50 championship win.
The Stars were led by Zoe Beard-Fails’ sturdy work around the basket, the leadership and game control of Lindsay Allen, the all-around excellence of Jade Clark, Dazia Hall and Meaghan Gilmartin, and the energy and clutch scoring of Kara DeGuisto. Tianna Walker, Alexis Brown and our new player, Maleika Wright, also gave the team valuable minutes, and played the type of lock-down defense that help lead the team to victory.
Go Stars!!! _______________________________________________________________
U13 Girls Win PVAAU Regional Gold Medal
Congratulations to the Fairfax Stars 13U Gold team, who finished the 2009 Potomac Valley District Qualifying Tournament undefeated, and won the Regional Championship gold medal. The team went 3-0 in pool play, defeating D.C. Heat 69-30, before beating the Maryland Flames 72-47, and getting past a tough, competitive Team Sol team 57-47.
In bracket play, the Fairfax Stars 13U gold team took on a physical, talented Maryland Lady Lakers team and won 84-47, then beat Cardinal Basketball 77-46 before playing a repeat match against Team Sol in the final. Team Sol was well-coached and well-prepared and kept the game close early. The Stars pulled away in the second half, and won 68-55.
This Stars championship was a total team effort. Superb game management and lockdown defense were provided by Lindsay Allen, Kara DeGuisto and Tianna Walker. Taylor Delgado repeatedly hit clutch jump shots. Zoe Beard-Fails and Dazia Hall “controlled the paint,” grabbing rebounds, blocking shots and providing close-in scoring. Jade Clark and Meaghan Gilmartin were the most versatile players on the team, playing every position at a high level. Alexis Brown provided valuable minutes and played excellent defense. Our injured player, Julianne Abruzzo, gave the team great support.
The Stars team will head to Mason, Ohio in July to compete in the AAU National Championship Tournament. Let’s go Stars! |
