Coach: Jerome McAvoy

Coach McAvoy graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2003.  At USC, he participated in many groups, including Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC).  Due to his hard work and diligence, he was commissioned as an Ensign on December 15, 2003.  After graduation he joined the Pacific Fleet as a member of the Surface Warfare community.  His was assignment to the USS Antietam, and served as the ship’s Auxiliaries Division Officer.  He completed his service obligation in 2006 and began his civilian career.

After pursuing a sales career for two years, Coach McAvoy realized that his talents were better suited to a career as a high school educator and basketball coach.  In August 2008, he enrolled at George Mason University and he commenced his studies to earn a teaching certificate as a Health and Physical Education teacher.  He will earn his Virginia teaching license in December 2010.

He started coaching basketball in 2007.  He coached the St Rita’s eighth graders in the Northern Virginia CYO basketball league.  Currently, he coaches the Falls Church’s U12 boys select team in the Fairfax County Basketball League

Coach McAvoy’s love for basketball began in Harrisburg, PA.  He learned the game while a member of St. Catherine’s in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) league.  Over the years, he progressed through Junior High School, Junior Varsity and Varsity High School Basketball.  He earned two varsity letters at Central Dauphin East High School.  Coaches and opponents noted his energy and game presence as his keys to his success.

Coach McAvoy expects hard work, dedication and commitment from his players. He will focus primarily on skill development and fundamentals. He values teamwork and will work hard to instill this intangible in his U8 team.  More importantly, he believes his players will grow to love the game as they develop their fundamentals.
