Coach: Tomas McHugh

Assistant Coach:  Eric Bowles

Coach Tomas McHugh received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Virginia Military Institute in 1986.  At VMI, Coach McHugh played basketball on full scholarship and also played 2 years of baseball.  A 1982 graduate of St. John’s College HS in Washington, D. C., Coach McHugh has had the privilege of being a Head Coach at the youth level for the last 6 years.  This will be his fifth year with the Fairfax Stars. Coach McHugh’s 2008 Stars Gold 12U team finished in the top 32 out of 100 teams at AAU Nationals. The team placed 4th at the Potomac Valley Regional and won the silver bracket of the Maryland Invitational Tournament. Playing up in half of their 14 tournaments, the team finished with an overall record of 39-26(21-11 in the 12U age group). The team also played up in summer league, while playing back to back games, it finished with a 7-3 record.    Coach McHugh’s 2007 Stars Gold 11U team finished 13th in the nation, was the bronze medalist at the Potomac Valley Regional and finished with an overall record of 39-19, which included playing up in 4 of the 13 tournaments. His Chantilly Youth Association 10U team won the 2007 Fairfax County championship and finished with an overall record of 22-2.

Coach McHugh was a Varsity Assistant Coach at Lake Braddock HS, Burke, Va. from 1995-1998.  Prior to that, he was a Varsity Assistant Coach at Newport Prep HS,    Kensington, Md. from 1987-1989.  His coaching philosophy has evolved from his experiences as a player and coach, as well as his continuous study of the game and coaches on all levels.  Coach McHugh feels that winning should be a goal, but not the most important one.  Facilitating each player’s individual growth and development within the framework of the team, ranks first with him.

Professionally, this is Coach McHugh’s 19th year as a self-employed Insurance Agent representing State Farm Insurance.
