Coach: Steve Chaplin

This is Coach Chaplin’s first year with the Fairfax Stars.  He has been coaching youth basketball for over thirty years coaching teams in New York, Arlington County, and Fairfax County.  For six seasons he headed the basketball program for the Arlington Hawks a youth program that sponsored up to 15 teams each season.    Coach Chaplin has coached Boys AAU for several organizations in the Metro area and is currently a member of the coaching staff at West Potomac High School after a successful stint as the Freshman Boys coach at Langley High School.  He has also coached youth baseball for over twenty years most recently for the Greater Manassas Senior Babe Ruth League.

“My goal for this season is to provide an opportunity for young men who have not signed yet to pursue their goal of playing college basketball.  We will work on skills, the mental aspects of the game, and the intensity required to play at the next level.”   The team will play in exposure tournaments with a heavy emphasis on playing where the team can be showcased to college programs.  Coach Chaplin’s teams are known for their disciplined up tempo style of play on offense and pressure man defense.

Coach Chaplin grew up playing basketball and baseball and running track in Rockland County, New York.  He attended Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York where he lettered in Track and was team captain his senior year.

“My coaching philosophy is that successful teams dictate what is happening on the court.  Through team effort and attitude you can make your opponent reactive which gives you an advantage.  Combine this with passionate, individual effort and you will have a winning formula no matter what the outcome of the game is.”

The 18U Boys Team attended the Splash Down Showcase at East Carolina University this past weekend, winning the Silver Bracket.  We finished second in our pool with a 2-1 record with double figure victories against Blue Stars Maryland and Immanuel Kings Select.  We suffered a tough three point lost to Sun Youth, one of the top Canadian teams.  In bracket play the team defeated a tough Montreal Hornets squad to win the Silver Bracket.  There were approximately 50 colleges represented and they showed a great deal of interest in our players.

In college news Gian Bretana, who played at Fairfax High School, has committed to play for Marymount University in Arlington.  Simeon Denny, Wakefield High School has committed to Potomac State in West Virginia.  Simeon is recovering from micro fracture surgery and will probably sit out next season.   Four other players are considering offers and we should have more good news shortly.

Congratulations to the players and coaches for a great job!  GO STARS!

Senior Boys Finish second in Hoop Planet Spring Classic

Playing in their first tournament of the season the Stars senior boys had a successful weekend at the Hoop Planet tournament played at West Potomac High School.  The team won Pool A with hard fought victories over DC Assault Blue and Team Virginia earning a bye into the semifinals.

In Sunday’s semi- final the team scored on a set out of bounds play with one second left to defeat DC Assault White.  In the championship game the team was defeated by a talented and hot shooting Team Take Over squad.  All in all a very successful weekend!

The team is back in action the weekend of May 9 and 10 when they travel to West Virginia to play in the Fire Exposure Shootout.
