Coach: Steve Chaplin
Coach Chaplin returns for his second season as coach of the 18U/Senior team with the Fairfax Stars. Seven members of last year’s team are on active college rosters or are redshirting. Five additional players received college offers but decided to forgo basketball at the collegiate level.
Coach Chaplin has been coaching youth basketball for over thirty years coaching teams in New York, Arlington County, and Fairfax County. For six seasons he headed the basketball program for the Arlington Hawks a youth program that sponsored up to 15 teams each season. He has coached Boys AAU for several organizations in the Metro area and is currently a member of the Varsity coaching staff at Oakton High School following experience at West Potomac High School and Langley High School. He has also coached youth baseball for over twenty years most recently for the Greater Manassas Senior Babe Ruth League.
Coach Chaplin’s teams are known for their disciplined up tempo style of play on offense and pressure man defense. “My coaching philosophy is that successful teams dictate what is happening on the court. Through team effort and attitude you can make your opponent reactive which gives you an advantage. Combine this with passionate, individual effort and you will have a winning formula that provides your players with the best opportunity for team and individual success.”
“My goal for this season is to provide an opportunity for young men who have not signed yet to pursue their goal of playing college basketball. We will work on skills, the mental aspects of the game, and the intensity required to play at the next level.” The team will play in exposure tournaments with a heavy emphasis on playing where the team can be showcased to college programs in April and May. “I will work with players and their high school coaches in refining or developing their recruiting package and communicate with college coaches.”
Coach Chaplin grew up playing basketball and baseball and running track in Rockland County, New York. He attended Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York where he lettered in Track and was team captain his junior and senior years.
