Mike Wills (Head Coach)

Coach Mike Wills is currently the head coach of the varsity girls’ basketball program at Herndon High School in Fairfax County. He joined the Herndon coaching staff in 2014 as an assistant coach and in 2016, Herndon qualified for states for the first time in program history representing the Concorde District. Coach Mike was named head coach in 2018 when Herndon moved to the Liberty District. He was recently honored as the Liberty District Coach of the Year for the 2019-2020 season. His association with the Fairfax Stars started in 2017 where he served as an assistant coach for the U16 Girls (10th) EYBL team for three seasons.

Though Coach Mike initially trained boys, he was quite enthusiastic about accepting the challenge to train and coach his first girls team. In December 2010, he was part of the vision to start Virginia Diamonds (an AAU Girls Basketball organization) from Northern Virginia. He accepted the challenge to lead the team as head coach and he continued to coach the Virginia Diamonds for the next five years. He led the Diamonds to numerous championship titles. During his tenure with the Diamonds, he was recognized by the Washington Mystics as Coach of the Week for his dedication and commitment to youth, community, and family. In March 2015, he merged the Diamonds team with the Germantown Lady Panthers where he coached for two years.

Under Coach Mike’s training and coaching, he has helped place nineteen players to the collegiate level. Shawn Mills (Hofstra), Devyne Newman (St Joseph’s), Indeya Sanders (American), and Aisha Shepard (Virginia Tech), to name a few. Also, as a dual sport coach, he holds seven National Championships in Pop Warner Football.

Coach Mike brings skill, intensity and enthusiasm that is executed on a level that can reach each player. With his technique of an uptempo offense and strenuous defense, it’s extremely important that he exemplifies positive energy, and his desire is to see progress in each player. His motto to why his players enjoy his coaching technique is simple: “We work hard but we also have fun!” He looks forward to continuing his success with the Fairfax Stars.
